Trump praises Kenyan runners, invites Ruto as guest for US Olympics in 2028

US President Donald Trump has praised Kenya’s long-distance runners and invited President William Ruto to attend the 2028 Olympic Games in the United States as his guest. He made the remarks on Thursday, December 5, 2025, during a ceremony in Washington that brought together leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The President of Kenya. We have the Olympics here. They do very well in the Olympics, those runners,” he remarked.

” I don’t know what the heck you do with those runners. They are very good. I’ve been watching them for a long time. So we have the Olympics coming to the United States. You know that. Thank you very much, and you’ll come as our guest.”

The 2028 Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles from July 14 to 30, 2028. It will be the third time the city hosts the Games, following 1932 and 1984. The United States will be hosting the Summer Olympics for the fifth time overall. While Los Angeles will remain the main venue, some events will also take place in other parts of southern California and in Oklahoma City.

Peace deal signed amid tensions

Trump made the comments at a wider summit where Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and DR Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi endorsed a peace deal aimed at easing the long-running conflict in eastern DR Congo. The United States has been pushing for talks between the two neighbours, hoping that reducing tensions could open the door to increased investment in the region.

The peace ceremony took place at the newly renamed Donald J Trump Institute of Peace in Washington. Trump described the event as a great day for Africa and the world, saying he believed the leaders would honour their commitments. Several African leaders attended the signing. along with foreign ministers.
