Treasury sets aside Sh2b to promote the tourism industry
By Harrison.Kivisu, June 16, 2023Tourism sector got a boost in the 2023/24 budget after the treasury allocated Sh 4.1 billion for the tourism fund and Sh 2 billion for the sector promotion.
This is an increase from the Sh 3.2billion allocated for the Tourism fund and Sh 1.8billion for tourism promotion in the 2022/23 budget.
Reading the budget estimates at parliament yesterday, the treasury Cabinet Secretary Professor Njuguna Ndung’u proposed approval of Sh 12.5 billion for stimulating sports, culture, recreation and arts. “To support tourism sports and culture I propose the parliament to approve Sh 6.4 billion under the sports arts and social developments 4.1 billion for tourism fund and Sh 2 billion for tourism promotion,” said prof Ndungu.
The move has been welcomed by a section of tourism stakeholders among them Mohamed Hersi, the Group Director of Operations, Pollmans Tours and Safaris who said the tourism industry has received the boost it needs to get back on its feet.
