Traffic alert: Southern Bypass to close from Saturday midnight for marathon

By , October 25, 2025

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi to ensure safety during the 2025 Standard Chartered Marathon. The restrictions will begin at midnight on Saturday, October 25, 2025, and continue until 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The Nairobi Southern Bypass, from the Ole Sereni Interchange to Kikuyu Town, will be completely closed during this period. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and expect delays.

Traffic diversions will be in place to ease congestion. Motorists travelling from Mombasa Road to Kikuyu will be redirected via Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way. Those travelling from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu should use Dagoretti Road. Commuters moving between Lang’ata and Dagoretti South are advised to take Lang’ata Road through Karen.

The National Police Service says it is working closely with relevant agencies to manage traffic flow and ensure the marathon runs smoothly. Officers will be stationed along affected roads to guide motorists and enforce rules.

Motorists are urged to follow all traffic regulations and the directions of officers. The NPS has warned that anyone breaking the rules will face stern action.

The Standard Chartered Marathon draws thousands of runners and spectators each year, which can cause heavy congestion. Early announcement of closures and diversions is meant to reduce disruption and protect both participants and road users.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor official traffic updates and adjust travel plans. Public transport users should also expect delays on routes near the marathon course.

Authorities stress that public cooperation is key to a safe and smooth event. While the closures may cause temporary inconvenience, they are necessary for safety.

Record turnout for marathon

The 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon will take place on Sunday, October, at Uhuru Gardens, marking the 22nd edition of the event. This year’s race has attracted a record 30,602 participants, the highest number since the marathon began.

The marathon is now World Athletics Road Race Label accredited, a milestone organisers say brings it closer to joining the prestigious list of World Marathon Majors. Local Organising Committee chairman David Mwindi said the progress made over the years has lifted the event to global standards.

Last year’s bronze medallist Peter Kwemoi Ndorobo will lead a strong Kenyan men’s field, while Ruth Wakabu, fifth in last year’s race, will headline the women’s competition alongside over 200 elite runners.
