July 22, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Political fallouts
Politicians from Azimio la Umoja continue to read from different scripts over the proposed dialogue and broad-based cabinet as fronted by President William Ruto.
There is likely to be a variety of reactions today in the wake of a controversial rant by Member of Parliament John Mbadi, who challenged former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka.
Hours after Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga debunked reports of splits in Azimio, Mbadi came out to call out some of the coalition leaders.
Speaking on Sunday, July 21, 2024, Mbadi called out Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who he insisted was not taking the coalition anywhere.
Kalonzo suggested that the country adopt a transitional government if Ruto agrees to step down.
In Mbadi’s criticism, the Wiper Party leader played populist politics at the expense of the country’s greater good.
“We cannot follow Kalonzo because we do not know where he is going. I am not persuaded that Kalonzo is taking us anywhere,” Mbadi stated.
Additionally, the ODM Party chair pointed a finger at former President Uhuru, accusing him of misleading Azimio members.
Mbadi argued that Uhuru does not have the powers to help determine the country’s leadership at the moment.
Biden steps aside
Reactions on recent developments in the US are expected to dominate the headlines today, this is after US President Joe Biden decided to end his reelection campaign.
In a statement released on Sunday, July 21, 2024, Biden announced that he will focus on running government affairs for the remaining time of his term, rather than seeking re-election.
Biden revealed that he decided in line with the wishes of his supporters and his party.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term. I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision,” Biden stated.
Biden further endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to fly the Democrats’ flag in the presidential race against former President Donald Trump.
His exit leaves his party in a virtually unprecedented position with months until the November election.
My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best… pic.twitter.com/x8DnvuImJV
