Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Floods crisis
The flood crisis has grabbed headlines over the past few weeks, given the destruction of property and loss of lives that it has brought upon.
As per the latest report from the government, 103 Kenyans have lost their lives due to the raging floods, while 28,484 households have been affected, with approximately 185,297 people displaced. Additionally, 29 people have been injured, and 21 people have been reported as missing.
The latest huge tragedy that has been experienced is the one that occurred in Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County on Sunday night, where over 40 people are reported to have lost their lives.
The incident occurred as a result of a tunnel that burst after it was blocked with debris, stones, trees, and soil during the recent downpours.
There are fears that the toll may increase as the search for missing people continues.
Wa Iria’s graft case
Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and his co-accused in a graft case worth Ksh351 million are expected to be arraigned in court today.
The accused will appear in court after Justice Nixon Sifuna of Milimani Anti-Corruption High Court on Monday, April 29, 2024, declined to extend orders suspending their prosecution.
Wa Iria, his wife Jane Waigwe Kimani, and her brother Solomon Mutura Kimani were ordered to surrender to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday evening for processing ahead of plea-taking on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
The court ordered Wa Iria, his wife, and Mutura to be escorted by their advocates, led by Wilfred Nyamu and Ndegwa Njiru, to EACC for processing and statement recording.
The judge has also directed that the seven co-accused persons who did not plead to the charges on Monday as earlier ordered should also present themselves before the court on Tuesday to face trial.
UEFA Champions League action
The UEFA Champions League’s penultimate stage starts today with a match between German giants Bayern Munich and their Spanish rivals Real Madrid at Allianz Arena.
Bayern defeated Arsenal to book a spot in the semis, while Los Blancos were 4-3 winners in post-match penalties against Manchester City.
The Bavarians will be looking to extend their home unbeaten streak in the competition to 16 games, as they have registered 12 victories and three draws at home during UCL play since dropping a 3-2 decision to PSG in the 2020–21 quarterfinals.
On the other hand, Real Madrid, who have won three straight Champions League knockout-round matchups against Bayern, are looking to win and extend their love story with the Champions League.
