January 10, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
1. School reopening continues
Some students will be reporting back to school today as learning resumes for the first term of 2024.
In the 2024 schools’ calendar, the students will proceed for half term on February 29 to March 3 for 3 days before closing on April 5, 2024, after 13 weeks of learning.
The April holiday will run for three weeks starting April 8 to April 26.
For the second term, students will resume learning from April 29 to August 2 for a period of 14 weeks and proceed for half term from June 20 to June 23.
Schools will then close for the August holiday from August 5 to August 23 which is three weeks.
In term three schools will begin the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment from October 28 to October 31 which is four days.
The KCSE examination will run for three weeks from November 4 to November 22.
Schools will then close for the long 10-week December Holiday from October 2024 to January 3.
2. KCSE results reactions
Two days after Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) more reactions are expected to continue.
This year, several schools have not received their results due to various malpractices. In his address to this concern, Machogu said the withheld results will only be released upon the conclusion of their investigations.
Notably, some performing schools have not released their results to the public stocking speculations among Kenyans.
Meanwhile, stakeholders, political leaders, parents and teachers are expected to continue airing their opinions after a total number of 48,174 candidates registered the lowest grade of E.
3. Kenya Power maintenance
Kenya Power has announced a power outage in various areas of Nairobi and Kisii Counties due to scheduled maintenance.
Electricity interruption in Nairobi County will affect Mathare Area 4 and its adjacent customers. The outage is scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m. and will persist until 5:00 p.m.
In Kisii County, the affected areas include Nyamache, Emenwa, Nyamache Trading Center, Nyamache Market, Emenwa, Ispre, Nyamagwa, Kebuko, Gionseri, Kionduso, Boitangare, Borangi, and adjacent customers. The power interruption is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m.
