Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

CS Kindiki’s Senate appearance

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki will be appearing before the Senate Cohesion Committee at Parliament Buildings over the persistent border dispute between Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.

Kindiki who previously served as the Senator for Tharaka Nithi in the last administration is expected to brief senators on the measures being put in place by the national government to resolve the dispute.

The meeting comes amid an appeal by Meru leaders to President William Ruto to implement the Zachary Ogongo report to resolve the dispute.

At the heart of the dispute is delayed adjudication and issuance of land title deeds.

Maisha Card debate

The Civil Society will be holding a press conference to discuss key concerns related to the plans by the Kenyan government to roll out a new digital ID system dubbed Maisha Card by September 29, 2023.

The Maisha Card is expected to replace the current second-generation identity card following a presidential directive.

Also approved is a unique identification number to be known as Maisha Namba that will be issued to all new-borns as a birth certificate number, a digital signature that will make it possible to identify Kenyans using mobile phones and other smart gadgets, and a master national population register.

Unveiling of RK FINFA

The National Treasury and Economic Planning Ministry will unveil the Rural Kenya Financial Inclusion Facility(RK FINFA) at KICC.

RK FINFA is a six-year (2022-2028) project funded by the government of Kenya and the International Fund for Agriculture Development.

The project is aimed at developing the capacities of rural smallholder farmers and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, through appropriate financing.

Ruto’s US trip

President William Ruto’s visit to the United States continues.

Ruto left the country on Wednesday evening and according to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the president’s trip aims at underscoring the country’s commitment to tech innovation in its role as a trade partner to the US.

While in the US, Ruto will visit Silicon Valley, and hold meetings with tech giants of Microsoft, Intel, Google and Apple.

“The visit aims to enhance investment opportunities and trade relations with the US, with a particular focus on nurturing Kenya’s startup sector dubbed Silicon Savannah.” part of the statement read.

Later, the President will be attending the 78^th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.

He will also take part in the UN Secretary-General’s climate ambition summit aimed at building on the successes of the recently concluded Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi

DP Gachagua’s Colombia trip

Today marks the end of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s tour in Bogota, Colombia.

The DP and his delegation, which includes farmers, will be attending the 7th Edition of the Coffee Producers and Roasters Forum in Medellin City, aimed at promoting coffee production for improved farmer earnings.

The forum will offer a platform for stakeholders to discuss the future of the coffee industry, with the delegation’s schedule packed with a series of engagements with leading coffee producers and traders in the Latin American country.

The DP will also engage in bilateral discussions with Colombian Vice President Francia Elena Márquez.

Tomorrow, Gachagua is set to attend the G77 Cuba summit – a coalition of 134 developing countries including China in the Cuban capital Havana.

He will address the summit on behalf of President William Ruto.
