October 12, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Reaction to Gachagua’s possible impeachment
As the weekend begins, politicians, except those drawn from the Senate, are expected to react after the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to send Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua packing.
In the vote which was a first of its kind under the 2010 constitution, 282 MPs against a threshold of 233 voted in support of Gachagua’s impeachment after Kibwezi West MP Eckomas Mutuse raised 11 grounds for the DP’s impeachment.
The grounds range from abuse of office, gross violation of the constitution, insubordination of the president and bullying of state and public officers.
Gachagua will appear before the Senate next week on Wednesday, October 16-17, 2024 to defend himself from the eleven charges levelled against him.
If 45 or more senators vote in support of the impeachment motion, Gachagua will lose his seat and will be left with the option of battling it out at the courts of law.
International football break
This weekend, football lovers will experience minimum action after most countries embarked on an international break to pursue regional cups and friendly matches.
However, the action is set to return next week with several exciting fixtures including a clash between Liverpool and Chelsea on Sunday, October 20, 2024 and Manchester United against Brentford on October 19, 2024.
