Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Body Identification
The Government led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and goverment chemist is set to begin the process of identifying the victims of the tragic fire at Hillside Academy, Endarasha.
The bodies, preserved at Naromuru Mortuary and Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor said they are severely burned, making identification challenging. DNA collection from families will start on Monday, followed by autopsies on Tuesday and later reconciliation of DNA samples.
The fire broke out in a dormitory housing over 150 boys aged 10 to 14. The dormitory’s wooden structure allowed the fire to spread rapidly. Hillside Endarasha Academy, a private school with 824 students, is located in Kenya’s central highlands, about 200 kilometers north of Nairobi.
In response to the tragedy, President William Ruto declared a three-day national mourning period, beginning Monday, September 9, and ending on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. During this time, the Kenyan and East African Community flags will be flown at half-mast across the country.
Harambee Stars final session
The Harambee Stars are holding their final training session in South Africa ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against Namibia.
The team, currently in Johannesburg, was visited by Kenya’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Jane Ndurumo, and her team on Sunday.
The match will take place on Tuesday at Orlando Stadium as Kenya seeks its first win in the qualifiers.
Planned power interruptions
Kenya Power and Lighting Company has announced planned power interruptions in several counties for routine maintenance.
In Nairobi, areas such as Muthaiga, Mobil Plaza, and parts of Limuru Road will experience outages between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
Kiambu County will see interruptions in areas including Farmers Choice, Nyambare, and Uplands Police Station during the same hours.
In Vihiga County, Eregi and Mudete areas will experience outages from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, affecting locations like Eregi TTC, Eregi Mission, and Mudete Tea Factory.
Kisii County will face extended outages from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, impacting regions like Keumbu, Kiamokama Factory, and Nyanturago.
