Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
KUPPET strike
The Kenya Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) union strike will enter the fifth day today, with the union members storming schools to eject non-compliant teachers set to be among the day’s top news.
The union has vowed to proceed with the nationwide strike despite a court order stopping the same.
Several instances of the striking secondary school teachers roughing up and ejecting teachers they found continuing with learning for the third term have previously been reported.
The union said the government had failed to meet its demands in the Collective Bargaining Agreement signed earlier.
President William Ruto had earlier on promised that his government would disburse Ksh13 billion towards the striking teachers’ accounts by the end of the week.
Ruto in Siaya
On the third day of his tour of the Nyanza region, Friday, August 30, 2024, President William Ruto will be in Siaya County where he will commission the Mageta Island Solar PV Mini Grid and launch the Siaya ESP Market and the Siaya Rice Mill.
He will close his tour in Siaya by attending a thanksgiving service for newly appointed Cabinet Secretary of Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi.
The President will close his Nyanza tour on Saturday by commissioning the Nyabondo Trauma Centre in Kisumu.
The tour comes at a time when Ruto is enjoying a newfound friendship with opposition leader Raila Odinga, who is considered the political kingpin for the Nyanza region.
Power blackout
Kenya Power has announced a scheduled power outage set for Friday, August 29, 2024, that will affect parts of the country.
The outage is planned for maintenance purposes, with different regions experiencing temporary power cuts throughout the day.
In a statement on its official website, Kenya Power said, “Notice is hereby given under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules that the electricity supply will be interrupted as follows: (Periodic interruptions are necessary to facilitate maintenance and upgrades of power lines, connect new customers, or replace power lines during construction, etc.).”
The temporary outage is expected to have a significant impact on various sectors and daily activities in these areas.
Kenya Power said the scheduled blackout on Friday will affect Nairobi and Kakamega counties
