Anti-government protests

Chaos and violence rocked Tuesday’s planned antigovernment protests as criminal elements posing as demonstrators took to mugging and vandalism across various towns in the country amid reports of political interference.

With a majority of youth choosing to sit out, the antigovernment protests have been overtaken by political chatter with the current administration pointing fingers at rivals for enabling violence in a bid to dent the current regime’s legitimacy.

The police on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, announced opening investigations on six politicians, two NGOs and a businessman for their involvement in financing the violence witnessed in the anti-government protests. They are suspected of financing, mobilizing youth, providing logistical support, and hiring goons to infiltrate the largely peaceful protests.

The lack of security and overriding political interests leaves the protests in limbo as the clock counts down to the historical Saba Saba.

Moturi has remained in custody at the Industrial Area Prison after being denied bail pending the hearing of his appeal on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in a case that will presided over by High Court judge Nixon Sifuna.
