Top 10 stars to have graced Kip Keino Classic
Kasarani Stadium on Saturday hosted the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic competition where fans were treated to a tournament to remember, Edwin Otieno takes a look at some of the stars that have graced the annual tournament that may be upgraded to Diamond League Status soon.
1. Fred Kerley
Fredrick Kerley is an American track and field sprinter who started his career competing in the 400 meters until 2020, when he transitioned to the 100 meters and 200 meters.
He won the 2021 100m Diamond League gold and the 2018 400m Diamond League. He won a 100m silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and a 400m bronze medal at the 2019 World Athletics Championships. He is also the reigning 100m World champion.
2. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
A three-time Olympic gold medallist Fraser-Pryce last week she was crowned the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year. She has also won 10 World Championships titles and one Commonwealth Games title as well as one Kip Keino Classic.
3. Justin Gatlin
One of the most celebrated male athletes from US, Gatlin has won four world 100m titles, one Olympic gold medal and three Diamond League titles. He graced the second edition of the Kip Keino Classic where he finished the 100m race third behind Treyvon Brommel and Fredinand Omanyala.
4. Trayvon Brommel
Two-time world 100m bronze medallist Brommel, graced the 2021 Kip Keino Classic where he won the 100m race at Kasarani after beating Omanyala and Gatlin. He also won the 2022 Diamond League and is a former World Indoor Championships winner.
5. Christine Mboma
The Namibian teen sentential is a darling of the Kenyan crowds after staging a cameo performance during the World Under 20 Championships in 2021 where she broke the World Record. Last years when she was braced for a duel with Fraser-Pryce, she suffered an injury and failed finish the 100m race at Kasarani. She won the 200m Diamond League in 2021 and bronze medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
6. Ferdinand Omanyala
Africa’s fastest man and Commonwealth 100m gold medallist has won the Kip Keino Classic title once and finished second during his debut in 2021.
7. Anita Włodarczyk
The three-time Olympic Champion has graced the Kip Keino Classic more than once. She has also won five World Championships titles.
8. Faith Kipyegon
The two-time Olympic and World Champion has been a star attraction at the Kip Keino Classic.
9. Soufiane El Bakkali
The Olympic and World Champion broke the hearts of Kenyans in 2021 when he beat Kenyans in their traditional 3000m Steeplechase race on their home soil.
10. Wojciech Nowicki
Wojciech Nowicki is Polish hammer thrower who has won one Olympic Gold Medal and two European Championships. He has also graced the Kip Keino Classic more than once.
