Tim Wanyonyi urges urgent action over rising insecurity in Bungoma
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, May 12, 2026Westlands Member of Parliament and gubernatorial aspirant for Bungoma County, Tim Wanyonyi, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of insecurity in Bungoma town and its surrounding areas, warning that the situation has become increasingly alarming and unacceptable.
Taking it to his X handle on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Wanyonyi has said that it is alarming that residents are now becoming aware of the regular reports of violent attacks by criminal gangs, some of which have led to the loss of innocent lives.
Wanyonyi has further singled out the case example of the recent death of a public health officer in the county who was recently slain.
The lawmaker has said that the trend has to be stopped and tackled urgently and decisively, urging the leadership of the nation’s top security agencies to intervene and restore peace.
He called on the Inspector General of Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), as well as all security agencies, to do their bit to make Bungoma safe for residents, business people and all those that depend on peace to conduct their daily existence.
“I call upon the Inspector General of Police, DCI and all relevant authorities to step in and ensure Bungoma remains a safe place for people to live, do business and carry out their daily activities in peace,” Wanyonyi stated.
“On our part, where we can help address the situation, such as providing security lights at strategic points to boost safety, we will consider doing so for our people. However, that alone is not enough, and our police officers must pull up their socks to ensure Bungoma remains peaceful, as expected of the people from the land of Mulembe,” he added.

Call for stakeholder engagement in security enhancement
The MP has stressed that local administration and stakeholders are ready to contribute to helping to make security better (such as putting in security lights at key areas), but that this would not be enough to stop the growing issue.
The main responsibility is upon the security agencies, and they have to do more and restore the confidence of the public by bringing the criminals to book and maintaining peace in the country,” he said.

Wanyonyi also expressed condolences to the family of the late public officer and all other families that have had their loved ones die in similar circumstances. He said it’s a very painful situation and appealed for unity to tackle insecurity.
Wanyonyi has also urged the responsibility of all citizens, saying that security is a collective responsibility and that, as long as they come together in a coordinated way, Bungoma can become a safe and peaceful society where residents and workers can live and work without fear.
