Three Bomet County Executives face impeachment over performance
Three Bomet County Executive Committee (CEC) members are facing impeachment over claims of incompetence.
The decision followed an impassioned session in which ward representatives voiced their dissatisfaction with the executives’ performance.
On Tuesday, the assembly received seven motions, including three on impeachment against the three CECs: Erick Ngetich (Roads and Public Transport), Andrew Sigei (Finance), and Dr Joseph Kirui (Administration).
Impeachment motions against County Public Service Board members were also received.
Young residents of Bomet had urged county assembly Speaker Cosmas Korir (pictured) to address several development issues, threatening to storm the assembly.
Impeachment motion
Speaking to reporters, Korir said the House Business Committee had met after the session and decided that the impeachment motion against the three CECs would proceed on Monday at 2.30pm.
Korir added that ward reps outlined an impeachment process that will include a thorough investigation into the allegations made against the CECs.
“The members provided enough reasons for the impeachment, and we will table them on Monday,” Korir said.
Korir made it clear that he was ready to form a panel to investigate the performance of each of the affected CECs within 10 days and provide a report on how to proceed.
“I will form a committee of five to 13 people if the members agree to proceed with the impeachment of the three CECs to investigate and submit a report on their performance,” Korir said.
None of the three CECs has responded to the assembly’s decision. They must decide whether to resign or prepare to defend their records.
“We conclude the notifications today. If any of the CECs mentioned decide to resign early or believe the allegations are not valid, they will have to wait for the entire impeachment process to end,” Korir said.
The assembly’s decision reflects a growing trend of demanding accountability.
