Thousands of Kakamega locals turn up for bullfighting extravaganza
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 23, 2025Thousands of residents in Kakamega County thronged Shinyalu on Saturday, August 23, 2025, for a highly anticipated 3rd edition bullfighting extravaganza.
The colourful event, steeped in Luhya cultural heritage, drew crowds who braved the chilly morning to witness the traditional contest.
The occasion was graced by Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa, whose arrival atop a truck sparked excitement among the jubilant crowd. He stepped out of the truck and got hold of his herding stick, wielding it up, and danced to the dais.

Locals, mainly from the Abaisukha, Abasamia, and Idakho sub-tribes, poured into the venue in high spirits, waving herding sticks in the air as drumbeats echoed across the grounds. Songs and dances added to the festive atmosphere as villagers proudly led their bulls to the showdown arena.
Among the key highlights was the much-talked-about contest between two bulls, Professor Irungu, which was one-eyed due to an injury sustained from its fighting spot, and Likhanga.
Professor, representing Ikolomani, had its owners showering it with praise, describing it as the pride of the community and the face of Kakamega’s bullfighting tradition; they also told the governor that their bull, Professor, is a very learnt bull.
Khalwale’s absence
Notably absent from the event was Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, popularly known as the “Bullfighter” for his passion and long association with the sport.
His absence was felt, especially given his deep ties to bullfighting. In 2024, Khalwale was forced to slaughter one of his prized bulls after it mauled a long-time caretaker, in line with Isukha cultural traditions.
Mulembe night
The Shinyalu bullfighting spectacle capped off a busy cultural weekend in Kakamega. Just hours earlier, Governor Barasa had presided over the Mulembe Nite edition at Bukhungu Stadium, a celebration of Luhya identity featuring electrifying performances from local artists.
The event also crowned Ms Ilagosa Parry from Khwisero as Miss Tourism Kenya, Kakamega County. She is expected to spearhead the promotion of the county’s culture, heritage, and diversity while positioning Kakamega as a top tourism destination.
