Peace efforts in the banditry prone North Rift region have been dealt a major blow after two people were killed in Baringo county despite the ongoing police operation in the region.

 Tension remains high following the Thursday killing of the duo at Kiserian in Baringo South sub-county.

 The two were herding their livestock when they were ambushed by armed bandits, who shot them  dead .

Livestock stolen 

 A Grade Four pupil died on the spot while Lokuyalem Lemilita, 70, who was shot in the back, died while being rushed to hospital.

The minor, who is a pupil at Kiserian Primary School, had accompanied his grandfather to herd their livestock when they were ambushed by the criminals,  who also made away with an unknown number of livestock. 

Residents who spoke to People Dailyhit out at the government for doing little to assure them of their safety even as they poured cold water on the ongoing security operation in the area,  which they say has not achieved much.

Disarmament exercise 

 According to Domininic Kateiya, the locals had raised the alarm three days ago after spotting armed men in the village.

 “Our people are living in fear of more attacks. It is sad that we continue loosing lives yet a security operation is going on,” said Amos Olempaka, a resident.

 The government reinstated the security operation to seize illegal firearms in the North Rift following rampant attacks in the region.

Concerns are, however, being raised on the effectiveness of the  exercise one month after the directive issued by Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya.
