Teachers interdicted over assault of Siaya student 

Two teachers accused of assaulting a primary school pupil in Siaya county over poor grades have been interdicted.

The two tutors  at Nyamininia Primary School in Gem sub-county were interdicted by their employer, Teachers Service Commission (TSC), after a video clip of the incident went viral. In the clip, the pupil is seen protesting against frequent beatings by teachers despite his efforts to perform well. 

Edwin Ooro, a lawyer for the two teachers — Paul Otieno Osogo and Maurine Awuor Otieno yesterday presented their interdiction letters at Siaya Law Courts during the hearing of their bond application. The duo was accused of administering corporal punishment on the pupil on July 19, 2022. The minor had attained 346 marks, which his teachers were reportedly not pleased with, instead demanding that he scores at last 400 marks.

Ooro told principal magistrate Lester Simiyu that, having been interdicted, his clients are not in a position to interfere with the case. 

But the prosecution, led by counsel Tracy Nambisia, opposed the bond application over fear of witness interference. Nambisia and investigating officer Pauline Wekesa said the teachers could  intimidate witnesses, who are also minors.

Meanwhile, the pupil’s father, Duncan Ochido, has allegedly requested the court for withdrawal of the case.  The teachers will remain in custody until tomorrow when the court will rule on the bond application.
