Tanzania’s opposition official regrets missing Raila’s burial
By Faith Lagat, October 19, 2025Tanzanian opposition party CHADEMA, led by National Vice Chairman John Heche, has expressed regret over missing the funeral of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
The party said its delegation was blocked at the Isbania One Stop Border, preventing them from joining Kenyans in paying their last respects to the veteran opposition leader.
Denied passage at border
In a statement dated October 19, 2025, Heche explained that the party’s leadership had made plans to send an official delegation to Kenya for the funeral. He noted that the delegation was denied passage at the border, which disrupted their travel itinerary and made it impossible to proceed.
“With deep sorrow, am informing you on behalf of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) that we will not be able to attend the funeral of the late Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga as we had initially planned,” Heche stated.
He added, “our efforts were hindered by being denied passage at the Isbania One Stop Border, which made it impossible for us to proceed.”

Tribute to Raila’s legacy
Heche said the party had intended to attend the funeral not only because of their friendship with Raila but also due to his longstanding role as a close ally and advisor to CHADEMA. He acknowledged Raila’s influence on democratic movements and opposition politics in the East African region.
“Our intention to attend was not only because the late Raila was a friend and close ally of Chadema, but also because he was our personal and party advisor on many political matters, especially in strengthening democracy, opposition movements, and solidarity among parties fighting for the rights of the people in the East African region,” the statement read.
Standing in solidarity
CHADEMA praised Raila’s contribution to democracy, justice, and equality in Africa, noting that his legacy would continue to inspire opposition movements across the continent. The party conveyed its condolences to Raila’s family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and the people of Kenya.
“On behalf of Chadema’s leadership, members, and supporters, we send our heartfelt condolences to you, his family, the people of Kenya, and all ODM members. We stand with you in unity during this difficult time of grief and mourning,” the statement added.
