Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic night fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy Senior School in Gilgil, in Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of students and left several others injured and traumatised.

In her condolence message on his Facebook page on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Kihika said the county joins the nation in mourning the young learners whose lives were cut short in the early morning blaze, describing the incident as heartbreaking and devastating for families, teachers, and the wider school community.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident at Gilgil Utumishi Academy Senior at dawn today that has claimed the lives of students and left many families in anguish. My heartfelt condolences go to the parents, guardians, teachers, and fellow students affected by this devastating loss,” Kihika said.

“As we mourn together, we continue to pray for the families and for all those injured or traumatised by this tragedy,” she added.

Call for investigations

She extended heartfelt sympathies to the parents and guardians affected, noting that the pain of losing children in such tragic circumstances is immeasurable. She also wished a quick recovery to those injured and offered support to those traumatised by the incident.

The governor called on security agencies and the Ministry of Education to carry out thorough investigations to establish the cause of the fire and ensure accountability where necessary. She emphasised that uncovering the truth is essential in preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Kihika further stressed that the safety and security of learners in schools must remain a top priority, adding that the county government of Nakuru is working closely with the national government and relevant agencies to strengthen safety measures across learning institutions.
