State using unga to dupe Kenyans to vote for Raila – Ruto

Unga politics yesterday took centre stage during Deputy president William Ruto’s tour of Ukambani in Machakos and Kitui.
Ruto warned the government on attempting to lower price of maize flour in order to hoodwink Kenyans to vote for Raila Odinga.
“You heard them yesterday (Monday) that they have lowered the price of maize flour (Unga) for a short period of time until past next month’s general election. isn’t this mockery before Kenyans?” he posed.
Ruto urged Kenyans to embrace the subsidized Unga even if it would be dished out for free but vote against the wishes of the Government in next month’s polls.He said that government was to blame for the looming hunger that has affected millions of Kenyans.
Simple handouts
“And I want to say for avoidance of doubt, the reason why we have hunger today in Kenya is because we failed to implement the Big 4 plan on food security, it is because we removed the fertilizer subsidy and that is why we cannot produce enough food. You cannot cure that problem by simple handouts of food for 20 days then after that the price will hit Ksh 300” said Ruto.
Ruto assured the people of Ukambani that his government will prioritise lowering the cost of basic commodities by making massive investments in agriculture.
“We will offer subsidized fertilizer to our farmers so that we are able to produce enough for our food basket. We shall cap the price of fertilizer to Sh 2000 down from current Sh 7000. We will also give our farmers certified seeds and expand water sources so that we are able to overcome the ongoing shame of hunger amongst Kenyans” said Ruto.
While wooing the young people voting bloc, Ruto said his government would introduce employment opportunities by introducing a marshal plan for job creation through massive investment in manufacturing sector, housing, textile and agro processing industries.In Tulia, Masinga, Matuu, Kola and Mavoko, DP Ruto urged the youth not to vote for his opponents who he described as having no agenda for the country.
He reiterated his plan to invest public resources in improving small scale businesses in what is dubbed as ‘hustlers’ fund’.He further said that the Wiper Democratic Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had been short changed by Raila Odinga on several occasions and it was time for the Kamba community to shift their political focus and be in hustlers’ government.
