State to dispose of obsolete police cars
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho yesterday revealed that the government is struggling to dispose of thousands of unserviceable police vehicles.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Public Accounts yesterday, Kibicho lamented that the tedious procurement and disposal regulations have made it difficult to dispose of unserviceable Government vehicles that have become a menace.
The PS said the ministry has initiated a process of disposal through the Procurement and Disposal Act, committees have been formed, and proposals approved across the country.
“We are disposing of a lot of them. But when you go to a police station, it is not just the police cars that are there, others are accident vehicles while some are held as evidence, which you cannot dispose of,” he said. Kibicho wants a decision made to clear the vehicles, which he says are littering police stations.
“At what point do we dispose of these motor vehicles or return them to the owners when some are being held as evidence?” he asked.
