Stalled Murang’a landfill project resumes after four-year hiatus

The construction work for the mega landfill located in Mitumbiri Makuyu Murang’a is set to resume after stalling for close to four years.
Cabinet secretary for lands and urban development Alice Wahome (pictured) said the waste management facility is set to be completed by August this year.
Speaking in Murang’a during a projects inspection tour, Wahome said the government has allocated funds for the completion of the landfill which was started back in 2016
The Sh1.2 billion project was funded by the World Bank and is aimed at solving the solid waste management problem in the county.

“I acknowledge there has been a delay in completion of the landfill and I requested the file containing the details of the project to be able to do a proper follow up” said the CS.
She said the excavation work has already been done and the remaining bit which includes laying the lining materials will be done in a short period of time.
“We have also allocated the final budget for the purchase of equipment which will be used in the facility and this is being handled by the procurement department” she remarked.
She said once completed, the facility will be handed over to the county government which will be managing it.
Wahome admitted that there was resistance from the residents in the area who were raising concerns over environmental impact the landfill could have adding that all aspects have been put into consideration.
She gave her personal commitment to ensure the completion of the facility in the projected time noting that it will solve the waste management problem. She added that the landfill has a lifespan of 30 years.
Wahome also toured Kangari and Muthithi markets which are under construction saying the government will ensure the projects initiated in the previous regime.
Wahome further assured local residents, that assessment of health hazards was done to ensure the safety of the people living around the sanitary landfill.
Meanwhile, the CS said Muthithi and Kangari modern markets being implemented in Kigumo Sub-county, were also lined for completion by December this year.
