Employees of the Postal Corporation of Kenya have petitioned Parliament to investigate the State agency’s financial strength with a view to resolving persistent delays in payment of monthly salaries.

Through Wajir East Member of Parliament Rashid Kassim, the petitioners said that over the past five years, the agency has consistently posted losses, which have rendered it incapable of remunerating staff salaries.

The situation has been compounded by coronavirus pandemic that has seen businesses drop significantly, they stated.

 “Corporation is undergoing a serious financial crunch and consequently has not paid salaries to its employees since March 2020,” the petition.

It adds: “Your humble petitioners pray that the National Assembly, through the Departmental Committee on Communication Information and Innovation, pursuant to what the Employee Act recommends, the Cabinet Secretary  responsible for ICT initiate a process of rescuing the Postal Corporation of Kenya from its current financial crisis.” 

Supporting the petition, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui said the committee chaired by his Marakwet West counterpart  William Kisang’ should review the parastatal’s mandate, which he said has been overtaken by technological changes.
