Six more die as coronavirus cases reach new milestone

The Ministry of Health yesterday reported six more deaths and 931 new confirmed cases out of 6, 691 samples tested in the last 24 hours as the country continued to experience an upsurge of coronavirus cases.

In his daily report, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that the death toll now stands at 902 while the total number of confirmed cases is 49, 721. Our cumulative tests are now at 659,920, he said.

He said that of the new cases, 896 are Kenyans while 35 are foreigners, adding that the youngest is a five-month-old baby and the oldest 90 years.

This is the third highest number of cases reported in a single day since the first coronavirus case was reported in the country in March.

The country crossed the 1,000-mark when 1,068 cases were reported last Thursday . Until then the highest was 960 cases reported on July 26. 

The Ministry of Health has urged Kenyans to exercise high-level of personal responsibility and discipline, saying the country is not yet out of the woods.

According to the latest data, Nairobi, which contributes about 57 percent of the national caseload, leads with 333 new cases followed by Mombasa (95), Nakuru (85), Trans Nzoia (61), Kericho (60) and Turkana (54).

Double figures

Other counties with double figures include: Kisumu (39), Uasin Gishu (24), Kakamega (24), Kiambu (23), Busia (19), Kitui (18), Kajiado (16), Machakos (14), Kisii (12) and Garissa (11) while 14 other counties have cases below 10.

In Nairobi, Langa’ata leads with 74 cases followed by Westlands (36), Dagoretti North (30), Kasarani (22), Embakasi East and Starehe have 18 new cases each. And, in Mombasa, Mvita and Nyali contributed the highest number of cases at 38 and 24, respectively.

There are 18 patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 48 on supplementary oxygen and 16 have been put under the High Dependency Unit (HDU) in various hospitals across the country.

“A total of 1, 198 patients are admitted in various health facilities while 3, 437 are on home-based isolation and Care,” said Kagwe.

On a positive note, 333 patients have been discharged — 256 from home care and 77 from various health facilities — therefore pushing the number of recoveries to 34,209.
