Simple and sassy, meet Mercy Sande is a lifestyle content creator
Mercy Sande is a lifestyle content creator with a bias in fashion. Popularly known as Secretary Sandy on Instagram, she runs an eponymous YouTube channel where she shares fashion and travel content. Nailantei Norari caught up with her to learn more about her style and fashion preferences
When did your interest in fashion start?
It all started when I was in primary school. That is when I started paying close attention to what I wore. My mum used to have numerous Vogue magazines that I would religiously pore over them and look at the beautifully dressed ladies. I have always wanted to be well dressed.
Where do you get your style inspiration?
Instagram and Pinterest help me see how different styles look on different bodies. I always use them before I try out anything new.
I love experimenting, picking something from here and amalgamating it with something I picked somewhere else and then making it fit into my personality. I believe that fashion evolves and inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere.
What does fashion and image mean to you?
For me, fashion is timeless. It is where you post something today, but if someone was to come across it 10 years later, they would still be blown away.
Image is important and heavily reliant on fashion. I believe that we should leverage fashion to portray ourselves as whatever we want.
How can you describe your style?
Chic, unique and youthful.
What inspired you to start your YouTube channel?
To tell the truth, I was bored. I needed something else on my plate. So, I started my YouTube channel where I have so much pressure on creating impactful content and being consistent to my loyal followers.
Do you have a signature look, and if you do what is it?
Yes, I do. I love having my legs out whether in shorts, a short skirt, a slit dress or even a short dress.
Which is the best fashion item that you own?
My high heels. Every woman should have at least a pair.
Which is that one item of clothing that everyone should own?
A good set of lingerie.
What is your one fashion pet peeve?
Wedge shoes; I just cannot stand them. They look clunky and heavy.
Which Kenyan fashion brands do you like?
I love Fintan Fashion, Yvonne Afro Street and Alpha Female Assembles.
What is your favourite scent and how does scent impact image?
My signature scent is Good Girl by Carolina Herrera. I believe that scent is an important part of image. We remember people who smell good. I know for a fact that good scents leave a good impression. I also feel so confident when I smell good.
Do you have style icons whom you look up to?
Yes I do. They are Huddah Monroe (Kenya) and Demi Rose (UK).
What’s that one fashion tip you can give share?
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Do not overthink it. Just dress up in what makes you feel good. Be confident in it. Do not over-layer or overcomplicate your outfit. Simple does it.
