Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has joined the growing list of leaders mourning the death of former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel.

In a heartfelt message shared on his official X account on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Sifuna recounted his recent interaction with the late legislator and reflected on the fragility of life.

“I spoke to Mathew Lempurkel only a few weeks ago. I cannot believe he is no more,” Sifuna wrote.

Sifuna used the moment to remind Kenyans of the importance of living meaningful and wholesome lives while they still have the opportunity.

“His death further reinforces the belief that all is vanity, and that while we are still here we must do our best to live wholesome lives,” he added.

The Senator also extended his condolences to the people of Laikipia North and the Maa Nation, whom Lempurkel served with dedication during his tenure in Parliament.

“To the Maa Nation, the people of Laikipia North, whom he served as MP, his family and friends, poleni sana. May his soul rest in peace,” Sifuna said.

Lempurkel, who represented Laikipia North, was widely respected for his commitment to his constituents and his advocacy on issues affecting pastoralist communities. Leaders and residents alike have described him as a voice that championed development, security, and the rights of marginalised communities.

Other tributes

Sifuna’s tribute comes amid a wave of public mourning for Lempurkel, with politicians, community leaders, and ordinary Kenyans expressing shock and sadness over his untimely passing. Many have highlighted his dedication to public service and his approachable nature as key aspects of his political legacy.

Most of the leaders, including Raila Odinga and Gladys Wanga, said Lempurkel’s death is not just a loss for Laikipia North, but for Kenya’s broader political landscape, where committed grassroots leadership is increasingly valued. Sifuna’s reflections on the fleeting nature of life underscore the broader human impact of the tragedy, reminding citizens to cherish time and service while leaders are still among them.

The late MP’s death has sparked conversations about leadership, service, and the enduring impact of public figures who remain committed to their communities until their last days. Through his message, Sifuna encapsulated both the sorrow of loss and the moral reminder that life, however brief, should be lived fully and meaningfully.
