A total of 18 teams from Alego Usonga, Gem, Ugenya/Ugunja, and Bondo/Rarieda are getting ready for the much-awaited Siaya County Women League which is scheduled to officially kick off this weekend across the county.

Siaya Queens, Siaya Starlets, Ravens FC, Ager Ladies, and Ndere Queens are set to represent Alego Usonga Zone with Gem Zone teams boasting of Rawala Ladies, Wagai Queens, Sinaga Green Valley Starlets, Victoria S.A and South Gem Academy.

Bondo/Rarieda Zone has Smart Ladies Yieke, Dero Divas, Alara Ladies, Nyamira Girls, and Madiany Ladies while Ugenya/Ugunja Zone has confidence in Nyasanda Queens, Sulo Ladies FC, and Uhola Ladies FC.

Excitement is building up among the 18 teams with Siaya Starlets FC plotting to become the first team to win the inaugural county league title.

“I’m trying to get out strong and clinch the title to represent my county in the regional league next season.

I want to see the team grow with the support of the community not having a one-man show as has been the case with many other teams,” Siaya Starlets chairman James Ahela said.

Starlets who are the 2019 Siaya township women championship, and 2020 Dorothy Awino cup besides emerging second in the 2021 DYNA communication outreach cup prides itself for nurturing girls since its inception in 2018, and Ahela says, playing in the county league will give its girls much exposure and avenue to launch their careers.

“We have 26 players from within Siaya. Most of our players are school-going, from primary schools to tertiary institutions. With the tight education calendar, it’s not easy assembling a competitive squad, it’s the case with many other teams here, but through the league, we will be able to expose other talents hidden,” said Ahela.

The league is divided into zones to reduce costs of travelling since there’s no sponsor yet with the format of play being on a home and away basis where the top two teams in each zone will proceed to quarterfinals then to semifinals (to be played on a home and away) and the finals being played on the closing ceremony day.
