The Kisumu county government has allocated Sh600 million for early childhood development infrastructure in the current financial year, an officials has said.

The investment aims to enhance the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in the region, said County Executive Committee member for Education John Awiti (pictured).

“The focus on ECD infrastructure is seen as vital for improving educational outcomes and supporting early learning initiatives,” said Awiti.

Young talent
Speaking in Kisian, Kisumu, Awiti explained that the government aims to identify and nurture young talent through CBC.

“To support this initiative, we have increased allocations for ECD skills-based learning, focusing on facilitating a smooth transition for children into more advanced education stages,” he said.

Nutritionists on boards
He also revealed plans to have at least one nutritionist appointed to the boards of schools starting in the next academic year.

“We want to consider the approach. By addressing dietary requirements and providing guidance on nutrition, they aim to combat the reliance on junk food, which can negatively impact brain development,” he said.
