SGR extension to Kisumu set for launch as Chirchir inspects Kibos site
Preparations are in top gear for the groundbreaking of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Naivasha to Kisumu, with the project expected to be officially launched this Saturday by President William Ruto.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on Monday, March 16, 2026, visited the Kibos area in Kisumu County to assess readiness ahead of the historic ceremony that is expected to draw thousands of residents and top government officials.
At the time, he confirmed that the project will extend the SGR line from Naivasha through Kisumu and eventually to Malaba, covering approximately 369 kilometres and forming a key link in the regional transport corridor connecting Kenya to Uganda.
Speaking during the inspection at Kibos, Chirchir said the government is keen to ensure all logistical arrangements are in place ahead of the launch.
“This is a very significant construction that will open up the regional transport corridor, which is currently serviced predominantly by trucks,” he said.
He noted that the railway will not only enhance the transportation of goods but will also introduce passenger services, easing the movement of people across the region.
According to the CS, the government expects more than 20,000 people to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday.
“We do expect that we will host in excess of 20,000 people on this particular day, so we are not taking anything to chance,” Chirchir said.

He added that officials are working closely with security agencies and event organizers to ensure the ceremony runs smoothly, especially given the presence of two heads of state.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is also expected to attend the event alongside President Ruto.
Chirchir described the project as historic, noting that railway construction projects of such magnitude are rare and transformative for the country.
“It is a historic event given the fact that railways are not built every day,” he said adding that the SGR extension is expected to significantly reduce the cost of transporting goods along the Northern Corridor while improving trade between Kenya and its neighbouring countries.
Once completed, the railway line will enhance connectivity between the port of Mombasa and the East African hinterland, strengthening regional economic integration.
Officials said preparations including security, logistics and site arrangements are underway to ensure the launch proceeds without a hitch.
The Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR extension forms part of the government’s broader plan to expand rail infrastructure and improve efficiency in cargo and passenger transport across the region.
