1. International day of sign language

Today the world marks the International Day of Sign Languages.

This was proclaimed by the United Nations(UN) General Assembly which seeks to recognize the importance of sign language and has made efforts to promote its use internationally.

The General Assembly also aims at raising awareness about sign language and the rights of deaf people.

This year’s International Week of Deaf People is set to conclude on Monday, September 25, 202.

2. Ruto’s US tour

Today marks the end of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA 78) in New York, US where President William Ruto is in attendance.

The Head of State has signed several deals on the sidelines of the General Assembly whose agenda this year is to assess progress towards the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address critical global challenges such as the climate crisis and debt concerns in the Global South.

Yesterday, Ruto was among the panellists at the Global Africa Business Initiative panel discussion where he appealed to the donor nations and multilateral organizations to hold their side of the bargain in financing the architecture responsive to Africa’s climate needs.

Ruto has also held meetings with several leaders including World Bank President Ajay Banga, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Amazon Vice President Susan Pointer, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva and Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy (Ukraine), Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (Portugal) and Qasym-Jomart Toqayev (Kazakhstan) among others.
