Senators strike deal with auditor general to enhance accountability of public funds
The Senate has accepted an invitation from the Auditor General to establish a working relationship to address matters of accountability in the management of public funds.
The framework, once established, will be aimed at bringing together the office of the Senate and that of the Auditor General.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting held in Mombasa County on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Senate Public Committee, led by the chairperson, Senator Moses Kajwang’, agreed in one voice to coordinate with the office of the auditor general to assess the accountability of public funds and follow to the later the recommendations on audit and legislature and capture them in their financial reports to ensure that there is accountability in the exploitation of public resources.
“Such a framework is welcome, and we endorse it fully. The framework should not be about Parliament and the OAG. It should be expanded and other stakeholders in the accountability space included,” Kajwang stated.

Other investigative agencies involved
The committee further noted that once the framework is established, other government investigative agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, as well as the Directorate of Public Prosecution, should be incorporated to ensure there is total accountability.
The committee members agreed to the decision that was proposed by the auditor general, arguing that the collaborative effort will streamline service delivery to the requirements of the constitution and that this will give an accurate depiction of the financial performance of the government institution in which the Senate is part.

Implementation framework
The office of the auditor general noted that such a recommendation is worth implementation for the accountability of accounting officers, citing delays in the implementation of such frameworks owing to delays and lack of structured collaboration. The committee, in return, committed to a three-month ultimatum to complete a draft of the implementation framework for its review and implementation.
