A Senate committee has requested for more time to conclude investigations and prepare a conclusive report on the wrangles at the Nyamira County Assembly.

In a report tabled in the Senate, the Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations Committee chaired by Wajir’s Sheihk Abbas recommends that the sittings of the County Assembly be held at the premises located in the Nyamira Assembly Building, opposite Kenya Industrial Estates, Nyamira.

The committee further recommends that pending the determination of the court cases, the County Assembly resumes its normal operations in accordance with the constitution, the County Governments Act and the standing orders of the County Assembly of Nyamira.

Speaker Enock Okero challenged his impeachment. There is also a petition challenging the election of Ward rep Thaddeus Nyarabo as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Nyamira.

The committee observed that the issue of parallel sittings of the County Assembly had led to systematic weakness in the running of the County Government and caused confusion.

The investigations came after Senator Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira) told the plenary that County Assembly of Nyamira had split into two, with each conducting parallel sittings in different venues.

According to Omogeni, one faction has been conducting its activities at the main County Assembly building while the other one conducting its sitting in other several towns within the county.

“The rival groups are led by separate individuals, each claiming to be a legitimate Speaker and Clerk of the County Assembly. This state of affairs has caused confusion.”
