Senator Methu says opposition will not be intimidated after Kirinyaga teargas incident
By Cy Muganda, January 9, 2026Nyandarua Senator John Methu Muhia has vowed that the opposition will not be deterred by what he described as police brutality following an incident in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, where teargas was used against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his entourage.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Friday, January 9, 2026, Senator Methu directly addressed President William Ruto, declaring that the opposition’s resolve to remove him from power remains unshaken.
“Mr Ruto, the message from Kagio is firm, not even your police brutality will break our resolve to #WanTam you. You threw teargas and shot at Rigathi Gachagua and his entourage, but the people of Kirinyaga stood firm,” Methu stated.

Defiant stance
The Senator issued a stern warning to Ruto, stating that intimidation tactics would not prevent the opposition from achieving its political objectives.
“You can kill those you want, but those who will remain will send you home,” Methu declared.
Gachagua breaks silence
Methu’s statement comes hours after Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, condemned the use of live ammunition, teargas, and interference by state forces following the Kirinyaga ordeal.

Taking to his X account, shortly after the chaotic incident, Gachagua hailed the courage and resilience of Kirinyaga locals as he continued his tour in the region, campaigning against Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
”Despite the heavy attack by police, live ammunition, teargas, vandalism of our equipment and state-sponsored militia brutality, we have reached the very heart of Kirinyaga County—Kagio! The people of Kirinyaga are resilient and courageous, united as one in the pursuit of change on August 10th, 2027! God bless you, and God bless Kenya!” he wrote.
