Senator Hamida Kibwana endorses Ruto’s call for youth to embrace marriage early

ODM senator Hamida Kibwana has voiced her support for President William Ruto’s recent advice to young Kenyans over 25 to prioritise marriage over fleeting social trends.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker representing women’s interests in the Kenyan Senate stated that committing to the union would reduce cases of gender-based violence.

The senator also opined that marriage is a means of making the youth accustomed to being answerable and responsible.

Marry

“When young people above 25 commit to healthy and respectful marriages, we strengthen families and reduce the factors that drive gender-based violence. Our youth must embrace responsibility, uphold respect, and invest in relationships that foster safer, thriving communities,” she stated.

Her remarks come after the president implored individuals aged 25 and above, both men and women, to embrace marriage and steer clear of the trend of club-hopping.

Ruto’s advice

Speaking during the wedding of Moses Mudavadi, son of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Qillian Saiya, daughter of former GSU Commandant William Atswenje Saiya and former Kakamega Senator Naomi Masitsa Shiyonga, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Ruto challenged the young people not to shy away from entering into lifelong partnerships with the love of their lives.

Ruto specifically urged the men not to avoid responsibilities by clinging to their single status but to accept the idea of marriage.

“Those of you who are above the age of 25, get married.  Wacha kuzunguka unatoka kwa club hii, unaingia kwa club hii, unaenda hio ingine,” he emphasised.

Grand wedding

“If you are a man, be man enough to marry the woman you love. Because we have so many people who ran away from responsibility… I want to encourage the men in this room to be man enough and marry the woman you love,” the Head of State added during the marriage ceremony at the Sayia family residence in Malava Constituency.

Ruto was accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto at the lavish wedding, which had the grandeur of a state wedding owing to the top dignitaries who attended the function.
