A Senate oversight committee has accused Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru for inflating the prices of medical supplies by more than Sh10 million.

This even as the Senate Public Accounts Committee put Waiguru to task to explain how the county government spent close to a million shillings on entertainment services during the launch of the Kerugoya parking space project.

The revelation on the dubious expenditure emerged after Auditor General Nancy Gathungu in her audit report for the year ending June 2022, stated that the Anne Waiguru-led Devolved unit inflated the prices for medical supplies during Covid-19.

In the report, the County Executive invited and contracted several suppliers for the supply and delivery of various items to be consumed at the Kirinyaga County Referral Hospital.

However, a review of the procurement records revealed that included in the specialised materials, are various items procured at an amount of Sh23.4 million which is Sh10.6 million above the market rate as per the Public Procurement Regulation Authority Market Price Index (MPI) for March 2021.

According to the auditor, Waiguru’s administration quoted a thermogun at Sh12,000 against the market price of Sh313, stainless food trolleys was quoted at Sh320,000 against a market price of Sh87,000 while a N95 face mask was quoted at Sh2,000 yet the market price was Sh645.
