Section of Thika Superhighway to experience 2-month traffic disruption

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that the disruption will affect both service lanes on the Nairobi- and Thika-bound sides.
“KeNHA wishes to notify the public that a section of Thika Superhighway (A2) Road at Kihunguro will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi and Thika bound service lanes from Monday 20th October, 2025 to Saturday 20th December, 2025,” KeNHA stated.
The disruption will allow for the construction of column bases and stub columns for the new Kihunguro footbridge. The project is part of KeNHA’s ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety and ease movement along the busy superhighway.
In a public notice issued by Acting Director General Luka Kimeli, KeNHA said it has developed a traffic management plan to guide road users through the affected section. The plan will include diversions, temporary signage, and the deployment of traffic marshals and police officers to help direct vehicles and ensure smooth flow.
KeNHA urges caution
Motorists have been advised to follow the directions given by the traffic officers and marshals on site. KeNHA also urged drivers to be patient and exercise caution while approaching the construction area to avoid accidents and unnecessary delays.
The project is aimed at enhancing safety for both motorists and pedestrians who frequently cross the highway at Kihunguro.
The footbridge will provide a safer crossing point for residents, especially schoolchildren and traders, who often risk their lives darting through speeding traffic. Once completed, the bridge is expected to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow by separating pedestrians from vehicles.
