Section of Thika Road closed 6 hours ahead of Kenya vs Madagascar match
By Kiprono Keileb, August 22, 2025Parts of Thika Road have already been closed as police enforce traffic diversions ahead of the highly anticipated CHAN 2024 quarterfinal match between Kenya and Madagascar at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to be held on Friday, August 22, 2025. A spot check by People Daily Digital confirmed that officers are actively implementing the traffic advisory, redirecting vehicles and managing congestion along the busy corridor.
The closures come six hours before kick-off, as thousands of Harambee Stars fans make their way to the stadium. Police say the measures are necessary to ensure fans reach the stadium safely, smooth traffic flow and maintain safety around key routes leading to Kasarani.
NPS has deployed additional officers along Thika Road and surrounding feeder routes to manage traffic, prevent bottlenecks, and ensure the safety of both fans and motorists. They are also working collaboratively with relevant agencies and urge all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Thika Superhighway diversions
The National Police Service (NPS) had earlier issued a statement outlining temporary road closures and traffic diversions across Nairobi. According to the advisory, motorists from Nairobi CBD heading toward Ruiru, Juja, and Thika are being redirected to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, where a roadblock has been mounted at Muthaiga.
Vehicles travelling along the Thika Superhighway toward Mwiki have been diverted via Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki. Drivers from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading into the CBD are advised to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road due to the roadblock at Ruiru Interchange.
Motorists from Githurai travelling toward the CBD have been guided to use Githurai 44 connecting to Kiambu Road. Fans heading to Kasarani Stadium are reminded that only vehicles with official access passes will be allowed through, while others should follow the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
With Kenya topping Group A and Madagascar in second place, authorities anticipate heavy traffic along Thika Road and other major routes, making early enforcement of diversions crucial. Fans are advised to plan their trips, follow police instructions, and allow extra time to reach the stadium.
The Harambee Stars clash against Madagascar kicks off at 5 pm at Kasarani Stadium, and Thika Road is expected to remain closely monitored until traffic normalises post-match.
