Search and rescue enters day 2 after Kajiado building collapse
Search and rescue operations have continued into a second day in Olenairi, Ololua Ward in Kajiado County, after an eight-storey building under construction collapsed and left at least four workers feared trapped under rubble.
The incident happened on Friday evening, May 8, 2026, when part of the structure came down while construction work was still ongoing. Heavy debris buried sections of the building, forcing emergency teams to launch rescue efforts immediately.
On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the Kenya Red Cross said operations were still active on the ground as teams worked carefully through the wreckage.
“Day 2 of search and rescue operations continues in Olenairi, Ololua Ward, Kajiado County, following a building collapse that left four workers believed to be trapped beneath the rubble,” the organisation said in a statement on X.
The humanitarian agency added that multiple teams remained at the site, working with support equipment to reach possible survivors. Multi-agency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross, the National Police Service, the National Disaster Management Unit and the county government, have joined efforts at the scene.

Rescue efforts
Rescue operations began the following day, after the collapse on Friday evening. Emergency teams moved in on Saturday, May 9, and started clearing the rubble as efforts to locate trapped workers got underway.
Heavy machinery and sniffer dogs have also been deployed to help locate people trapped under the debris as rescuers continue to clear sections of the collapsed structure.
According to earlier reports on Saturday, residents living near the site said they heard a loud bang before the building gave way, followed by clouds of dust rising over the area.
According to witnesses, some of those feared trapped were construction workers who had been on site at the time of the collapse.

Police later sealed off the area to allow rescue teams to work without interruption and to prevent crowds from interfering with operations.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, although residents have raised concerns about construction standards at the site.
The incident adds to recent cases of building collapses in Kenya, raising fresh concerns over safety enforcement in the construction sector.
