Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) governing council has been urged to incorporate girls’ rugby competition into their annual schools sports calendar.

KSSSA has been credited for playing a huge role of feeding national teams in various sports disciplines with many big sport stars this country has produced, tracing their roots to a school.

Annually, KSSSA organises athletics, basketball, handball, hockey, rugby 7s and 15s as well as swimming in Term One and Netball, Racquet Games (badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis), Soccer (U16 and U20) as well as volleyball in Term Two schools calendar.

However, in all the above disciplines and apart from netball that only features girls’ competition, the association has yet to give girls’ rugby, a place in their rich annual sports calendar like they have done to athletics, basketball, handball, hockey, swimming, racquet games, soccer and volleyball games that feature both boys and girls.

It is on the backdrop of its uptake that many schools across the country have embraced the sport, leading to  Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Nyanza Region Development Officer in charge of Get Into Rugby (GIR) Youth programme, Laban Ouko, to urge  KSSSA to incorporate girls’ rugby into their annual calendar to help spread the game into every corner of the  country.
