Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja yesterday urged leaders to promote gender equality to help empower girls in exploiting their full potential.
Speaking at the University of Nairobi during celebrations to mark International Day of the Girl Child, he said the day offers an opportunity to advocate for girls’ rights and raise awareness about the issues they may encounter such as discrimination, violence, limited access to education and healthcare services.
“Empowering girls and investing in their rights is not only a moral imperative but also essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Girls are not just the future; they are the present, and we must support their journey,” he said.
Economic independence
Sakaja urged the government to address the limited economic opportunities, especially in the rural areas, that lead to poverty and lack of access to quality education, which ultimately leads to limited career prospects and economic independence.
According to the governor, investing in girls’ rights is not just a matter of social justice; it’s a strategic choice for a brighter and more equitable future. One must recognise that girls’ leadership and well-being are inextricably linked.
“On this International Day for the Girl Child, let us all take a moment to reflect on the progress made and the work that remains. It’s a day to commit ourselves to ensuring that every girl, regardless of her background or circumstances, has the chance to grow, learn and flourish. By doing so, we invest in a brighter and more equitable future for all,” said Sakaja.
The county chief emphasised how education plays a key role in girls’ empowerment saying that ensuring that girls have equal access to education is a fundamental right.
Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris empowering girls will not only benefit them individually but also contribute to the advancement of societies and economies.
“Empowering girls means giving them the tools, opportunities and support to reach their full potential. This empowerment takes many forms, from ensuring access to quality education to promoting their participation in decision-making processes,” she said.
