Action in the 2019/20 Safari tour golf series resumed at the Thika Greens Golf Resort at the weekend after the Christmas holiday break.

It makes it the seventh tournament on the tour, which has so far made successful stops across Kenya and Uganda, in the process producing five different winners, namely; Greg Snow, Madalitso Muthiya, Tonu Omuli, Jastas Madoya and Dismas Indiza.

The leg has attracted over 40 professional golfers drawn from the region led by Johnnie Walker-sponsored Indiza, who is the current series leader and comes to Thika Greens off back-to-back wins at the Lake Victoria Serena and Great Rift Valley Golf Resorts.

Indiza, on 290.6 ‘Road to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open’ points, will be in the good company of second-placed Eric Ooko (232 points), Thika Golf Club’s Simon Ngige (214.6 points) and Snow.

Other players at the seventh leg of the Safari Tour include Rwanda’s Aloys Nsabimana who is currently in 27th spot on the series standings, Uganda’s Mwanja Becca and Malawi’s trio of Paul Chidale, Partridge Shycal and Symon Moses.

The tournament was preceded by a PRO-AM event which was won by former Kenya sevens rugby international Lavin Asego on Saturday.

Playing off handicap 15, Asego, a dual code Kenya rugby star, returned identical scores of 20 at the front and back nines for a gross score of 40, handing him the overall winner’s title.

Asego played alongside another rugby legend Humphrey Kayange and A Kwaya from the team anchored by Zambian professional, Sydney Wemba which finished in second place, on 83 points, two behind the eventual winners, the team of F Makazi, A Mwaura and R Njuguna, anchored by Muthaiga Golf Club’s Geoffrey Makokha.
