President William Ruto has promised to reserve 20 per cent of the Affordable Housing project for teachers.

The announcement came during his meeting with teachers drawn from different unions at State House on Saturday, September 13, 2025. The president said he would sign an MoU that will ensure teachers receive a substantive share of the Affordable Housing Project.

“Today we are going to sign an MoU so that teachers can get 20 per cent of all the housing we are constructing,” Ruto said.

The announcement attracted cheers from the hundreds of teachers who attended the meeting.

Other beneficiaries

Teachers become the second group to benefit from the Affordable Housing Program after the disciplined forces, who had earlier been promised 20 per cent of the total houses.

The allocation for the disciplined forces covers the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Police Service, the Administration Police, the Prisons Department, and other agencies within the disciplined forces.

“We will reserve 20 per cent of our housing units under the Affordable Housing Programme for members of the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, the National Youth Service, and the Kenya Prisons Service.

“These disciplined officers will benefit from single-digit interest rate credit facilities as low as 3 per cent a year to grow the number of homeowners,” Ruto said.

As of September 2025, 792 housing units allocated to the disciplined forces launched by CS Aden Duale while he was still the Defence Cabinet Secretary had already been completed.

The Harambee Stars players are also among the beneficiaries of the programme after the government vowed to help pay half the cost of each unit.

“The two-bedroom house that we have agreed on in affordable housing costs Ksh2 million. We are going to pay for you half that amount, which is Ksh 1 million,” Ruto announced.

“You will cover the remaining one million, or we will give you a mortgage which you can pay for over 20 years. That would translate to a payment of Ksh2,000 or Ksh3,000 every month.”

The president also pledged to provide a lasting solution to the teachers’ medical insurance scheme.
