Ruto pledges to promote, safeguard interests of Kenyans in diaspora
President William Ruto has promised to safeguard interests of Kenyans living in the diaspora.
Speaking when he met Kenyans living and working in the United States in Washington, DC, Ruto said remittances from Kenyans in diaspora have become country’s biggest source of foreign exchange.
“The government recognizes the role played by Kenyans in diaspora to the economy.
“The remittances to families and interests back home have become the country’s biggest source of foreign exchange.
“This contribution to our development is tremendous. We will promote and safeguard the interests of the Kenyan Community abroad for our mutual benefit,” Ruto said.
Ruto is among over 50 African Heads of State who attended US-Africa Summit follow President Joe Biden invitation.
Ruto meets Blinken
The President further held talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that centred on trade and security.
“We are not turning back on creating a democratic society guided by the rule of law and independence of constitutional institutions.
“Our commitment is firmly to the constitutional due process and the implementation of judicial orders.
“Held talks with the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken who praised Kenya’s growing democracy, entrenching the rule of law and independence of institutions of governance, Washington, D.C., United States of America.
“During the talks, the U.S. pledged to enhance economic partnership on several fronts such as health, security, agriculture and food security. Also discussed security in the region, especially Ethiopia, Somalia and DRC,” the President said.
The Summit showed how persistently committed the United States is to Africa, underline the significance of US-Africa relations, and highlight how closely they are working together on common global priorities.
The Summit, which happened between December 13-15, built on shared values to better foster new economic engagement, strengthen the US-Africa commitment to democracy and human rights, mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and future pandemics, work cooperatively to strengthen regional and global health, promote food security, advance peace and security, respond to the climate crisis, and strengthen ties with diaspora communities.
