Ruto, Raila lead netizens in celebrating Faith Kipyegon’s victory

1500m world record breaker Faith Kipyegon’s victory in Italy has been received warmly across the globe.

Faith Kipyegon set a new 1500m world record in the Florence Diamond League meeting on Friday, June 2, 2023.

Kipyegon streaked clear to win in 3 minutes 49.11 seconds, breaking the 3:50 barrier held by Genzebe Dibaba since 2015.

Kipyegon has won both world and Olympic gold on two occasions but this is the first time she has broken the world record and now holds the first and third fastest times in history, running her previous best of 3:50.37 last August.

On her part, Faith took to Twitter to celebrate writing;

“WORLD RECORD – 3:49.11. I am really thankful, today was a wonderful day in which everything came together. The world record was in my mind since last year, but I wanted to approach it slowly by slowly to see what was possible this year. I can’t believe it! Now I have…”

Several leaders in the country have celebrated Faith Kipyegon’s new record including President William Ruto and former prime minister Raila Odinga.
