Dairy farming in Murang’a got a shot in the arm after President William Ruto promised to get the farmers 20 coolers to help in milk preservation.

Ruto said the government plans to buy 600 coolers to be distributed among various cooperatives in the country.

Ruto’s thoughts

Speaking in Kigumo Murang’a, the president said the dairy sector is one of the key pillars in agriculture which largely contributes to the economy in the country.

“Murang’a is one of the counties leading in milk production in the central region and the coolers will be a major boost for them,” said the president.

“The governor will organize with the local leaders where the coolers will be installed and they will be delivered by December this year” he added.

He also said the government will zero-rate all the materials used in making animal feeds saying this will help lower the cost of dairy farming.

The county has set aside Ksh250 million for the milk and mango farmers who will be getting Ksh3 extra on top of the pay they get from the supplier.

Tea farmers to enjoy

Further, he said the tea farmers will be enjoying more returns after the government removed the taxes charged on produce.

The president said the government is committed to reviving the agricultural sector to help boost food production.

He pointed out that the move to give subsidized fertilizer will also go a long way to ensure farmers are able to maximize their production on their farms.

Ruto also moved to assure the residents that all the stalled projects in the area will be completed promising his personal commitment to ensure they are finished.

Besides the subsidy program, the president also launched the smart cities program, school feeding program and EDCE upgrading program which has been initiated by the county government.

The feeding program will cater for 42,000 pupils in the pre-primary school in the county.

Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata said the feeding program aims at ensuring all the children are catered for within the school.

“We learnt that there were some children, especially in arid areas were not going to school due to lack of food and this program came in handy for them,” he said.
