Ruto pledges Ksh5M sponsorship for 250 Kwale students in new TVET skills push
President William Ruto has announced a Ksh5 million sponsorship programme targeting more than 250 students in Kwale County as part of the government’s broader push to expand technical and vocational training opportunities for young people.
The Head of State made the announcement during the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of hostels at Lungalunga Technical and Vocational College in Lungalunga Constituency on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Sponsorship for short courses
Ruto, in a statement shared via his official X account shortly after the event, said the government will sponsor students from the area to undertake short courses at the institution in a move aimed at equipping youth with practical and employable skills.
“We will also sponsor more than 250 students from the area to undertake short courses at the college at a cost of Ksh5 million, as part of our commitment to empowering the youth with practical skills,” Ruto stated.

The initiative is expected to benefit young people seeking technical training in various skill-based disciplines.
Ksh260 million hostel project launched
During the event, Ruto also launched a Ksh260 million hostel construction project at the college aimed at improving student accommodation capacity.
The project forms part of the government’s wider programme to expand infrastructure in higher learning institutions across the country.
Ruto revealed that the government is constructing 3,600 hostel units across universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses in Kwale County.
According to the president, the plan is intended to provide students with a dignified and conducive learning environment while supporting access to education.
“We are constructing 3,600 hostel units across universities, TVET institutions and KMTC colleges in Kwale County to provide our students with a dignified and conducive learning environment,” he stated.
The announcement comes as the government continues to prioritise technical and vocational education as a key strategy in addressing youth unemployment and skills development.
Expanding TVET access and infrastructure is expected to help prepare more young Kenyans for opportunities in industry, entrepreneurship, and the wider labour market.
