Ruto mourns youth mobiliser Elvis Otieno
By David Nthua, July 23, 2026President William Ruto has mourned the death of Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as “Beast”, describing him as an exceptional young Kenyan who embraced the values of good governance.
In a message on his official X account on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Ruto said Otieno dedicated his energy and voice to advocating for fellow students while believing that leadership and public service could improve lives.
“Beast was an exceptional young Kenyan who embraced the ideals of good governance early in life,” Ruto said.
The president said Otieno’s death was a loss to his family, friends, colleagues and the wider student leadership movement in Kenya.
Condolences
Ruto extended his condolences to Otieno’s family, the Technical University of Mombasa community and university students and their elected leaders across the country.
He said Otieno’s commitment to leadership, service and the pursuit of a better society should continue inspiring young people.
“May you find strength in this difficult moment, and may Elvis’ commitment to leadership, service, and the pursuit of a better society continue to inspire many more young people,” the president said.
He concluded his message by wishing Otieno eternal rest.
Advocacy and public service
Otieno was known among students for his involvement in student leadership and advocacy, where he championed issues affecting university learners.
His death has attracted messages of condolence from leaders, students and members of the public, with many remembering him for his contribution to youth leadership.
The Technical University of Mombasa community has also joined in mourning the loss of one of its former student leaders.
Ruto’s message adds to a growing list of tributes following the death of Otieno, who was regarded as an active voice in student affairs and youth engagement.
