President William Ruto is set to jet out of the country for a climate summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a statement released by the State House Spokesman on Sunday, September 7, 2025, it was announced that the Head of State will attend the Second Africa Climate Summit, a landmark gathering of African leaders aimed at advancing climate action and promoting green growth.

According to the statement, the high-level meeting in Addis Ababa builds on the inaugural Africa Climate Summit held at KICC in Nairobi in 2023. That summit, which brought together heads of state and other leaders to discuss climate issues, had President Ruto making headlines when he arrived in an electric car and personally drove himself as a symbolic gesture in support of green energy and environmental preservation, which was a theme of the event.

“Building on the 2023 Nairobi Declaration, which set Africa’s bold climate agenda, President Ruto will launch the report “From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership.” The report reviews progress since the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, assesses current realities, and maps future pathways.” The statement read

As part of his agenda in Addis Ababa, President Ruto will launch a report titled From Nairobi to Addis: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership. The report will assess the achievements made since the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, review current realities, and chart a future pathway for the continent.

Ruto, who chairs the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, is expected to push for fair resource allocation, equitable carbon pricing, and financial reforms to ease debt burdens and mitigate climate risks.

“He will also witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), bringing together African governments, financiers, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, and private sector actors.”

Other engagements

Beyond the summit, the president will also address the Africa-Caricom (Caribbean Community) Summit, where discussions will centre on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and transcontinental cooperation. He is further scheduled to hold bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening ties, expanding trade, and advancing joint action on global challenges.

Additionally, President Ruto is expected to be the chief guest at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a symbol of African self-reliance.

The statement also highlighted the role of the Ethiopia-Kenya Power Interconnector, which has enhanced access to clean, affordable electricity in Kenya, improving the country’s energy coverage and sustainability.
