Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has made a bold proclamation, asserting that President William Ruto stands at the helm of a transformative revolution in the country.

In a statement seen on his X account on July 16 2024, Omtatah, in a sarcastic address, said Ruto was the leader spearheading change among the youth who have been causing uproar recently.

In Omtatah’s opinion, Ruto was the leader advocating for Gen Zs to mobilize almost weekly in anti-government demonstrations.

Omtatah advised people not to look further into who advocated for protests, but instead hold President Ruto accountable for his actions which have forced people to express their rage on the streets.

“They have been looking for the leader of this revolution. President Ruto is actually the leader of this revolution.  He’s the one doing the things that are annoying the people of Kenya,” Omtatah remarked.

Protesters allowed to storm parliament

Omtatah’s comments on Ruto follow after he weighed on the protesters storming the National Assembly during the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests.

According to Omtatah, the police allowed the protesters to break into parliament, adding that no known force could overpower the police.

“First of all, I believe that if the Kenya police wanted to stop anyone from getting into the parliament there would be no force that could overpower the police. The police simply allowed it to happen. They pulled back,” Omtatah said.

The senator further disclosed that the legislators’ efforts to address the protesters were futile as security did not allow them.

Gen Z nationwide protests

Similarly, Omtatah’s comments come on the day Gen Zs were taking up to the streets to express their grievances with the current political regime.

Taking to the streets once more on July 16, 2024, protestors wore slogans like “Rage and Courage” and trended under the hashtag #OccupyEverywhere #RutoMustGo.

According to various posters and conversations on socials, the protest was aimed at demanding accountability from leaders and fighting corruption.

A number of posters promoting the event flooded social media, asking participants to wear clothes decorated with the Kenyan flag, carry water and a phone as a symbol of national pride and unity against the challenges of government.
