President William Ruto expressed his deep sadness over the passing of sports journalist Sean Cardovillis, who died on Saturday morning.

Although the exact cause of his death is still unknown, his employers reported that he collapsed on the staircase outside his Westlands residence.

Ruto shared a photo of himself with Cardovillis taken during the recent World Rugby Championship in Naivasha.

He described Cardovillis as a brilliant sports journalist and remembered him as a cool, insightful, and gifted professional.

Ruto noted that Cardovillis played an integral role in various radio stations and praised his clear and concise voice, passion, and upbeat personality.

He extended his condolences to Cardovillis’ family and the media fraternity.

“Saddened by the passing of a brilliant and outstanding sports broadcaster Sean Cardovillis. He was a cool, insightful and gifted journalist who played an integral role on our radio stations. We will miss his clear and concise voice, passion and upbeat personality. Our prayers are with his family and media fraternity at this painful time. Rest in Peace, Sean,” the president stated.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also expressed his sorrow over Cardovillis’ untimely death, highlighting his extensive knowledge of various sports, especially Motorsport.

Gachagua offered his deepest sympathies to Cardovillis’ family, friends, and colleagues in the media and sports fraternity, acknowledging the loss.

“Saddened by the untimely death of renowned sports journalist Sean Cardovillis, who passed on this morning. His wit and wide knowledge in various sports, especially Motorsport, will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues in media and sports fraternity for this loss,” he shared.

James Wokabi remembered Cardovillis by sharing how the journalist had opened doors for him at Capital FM, giving him his first on-air opportunity.

Wokabi emphasized that Cardovillis had inspired a whole generation of journalists with his passion, dedication, and sports knowledge.

He referred to Cardovillis as an icon, legend, role model, and the “Godfather of sports radio.”
